Father's Day Activities & Crafts

---------- Directory ----------

History of Father's Day

Father's Day was first proposed in 1909 by Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington because she wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. This is contrary to popular misconception that it was established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards.

William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington State. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day." In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

Best Buds T-Shirt
Age
: 4 and Up
Mess: Medium
Material: T-shirt for the daddy and child, Crayons or markers, White paper, Pencil, Fabric Paint and Straight Pins.
Instructions:Have your child draw a picture of anything they want to draw for Daddy. You will want the picture to be able to fit both size T-Shirts so you will need to use a local area photocopier or a computer scanner and printer to resize the picture accordingly. Next draw around the general outline on the back side (use a window if needed to see through the paper) of both pictures with a pencil, you will want to press hard with the pencil to help transfer the picture in the following step. Now put the picture face up (so the outline is touching the shirt) on the shirts and color the entire picture with a pencil while it is on the shirt. It helps to pin the picture to the shirt so it stays still. Remove the picture from the shirt and you should have a lightly transferred copy of your child's picture on the father's shirt in pencil. Next use fabric paint and paint in the pictures on the shirts using the same colors your child used.
